Well, we are off into a new adventure and have added a small herd of goats to our menagerie. Plenty of weeds and brush in the pastures will be right up their alley for grazing. We found a young local fellow who had a large herd from which we could take our pick of young nannies who should be bred already by two billies they have been living with. We selected ten, including one who already had her kid on the ground. At less than a week old, she was too small to ride home in the trailer, and so came home tuckered out and fast asleep on my lap in the truck. They all seem to be getting along fine, and were delighted to get right down to business eating. The mesquite trees in the front field now have a distinct and neat “browse line” which reveals how high they can reach into the branches. The horses didn’t quite know how to take the newcomers, and spent the better part of the first day running around full speed with their tails in the air – snorting with wild-eyed looks at what must be horned horse-eating...
